Voice Traditional Dances – Feast to our eyes

Village Traditional Dances must be saved              -              R. Saipriya, 10-A
Many years before, the entertainment means traditional dances like Kummi, Karagam, Puppet show, silambam, Poikal Kudirai for the people. But now, the improvement in technology has changed to television, radio, computer and the traditional dances are not in custom.
Karagam :
Karagam is a folk dance accompanied with musical instruments and balancing a pot on the head. Traditionally this dance is performed by the villagers in praise of the rain goddess.
Kummi:
Kummi is one of the most important and ancient forms of village dances of Tamilnadu. It was originated when there was no musical instrument.  Mostly this is performed by women clapping their hands. They perform during temple festivals and Pongal. The first line of the song is sung by a lady, which is repeated by others.
Poikkal Kudirai Dance:
The dummy horse dance is a dance where the dancers wear the figure of horse on their hips. This is made of light weight material. The dancer also wears wooden legs which seem like hooves of the horse. This dance needs much training and skill.
Silambattam :
Silambattam is fighting with a long stick with opponent and each of them will show their power. Olden days, these fighting were considered as a self defence.
Now, these dances and fighting are not known to our generations and these must be made to known to all the people. Last year 2010 Sangamam encouraged these dancers. And many folk dance programmes must be performed and we must save our traditional folk dances and dancers to protect our culture and traditions.

An eye opener
